Franco-German Relations

The Franco-German Relations Program was established in 1989. The main objective of the program is the ongoing analysis of bilateral relations between France and Germany, of their role with regard to EU policy-making, and of French foreign policy.

Aside from the regular meetings of the discussion group on France and Franco-German relations, the program organizes conferences and informal round-table discussions. A variety of publications and interviews make the results of the program and conferences accessible to a wider public.

Our main objective is to elucidate bilateral and EU-oriented political interests of the respective partner, both in France and in Germany, and to further the understanding of the countries' particular foreign policy traditions and motives. In light of EU enlargement, identifying options for a Franco-German cooperation within the EU-27 represents a key issue as well. This includes the analysis of the perception of the bilateral “motor” by third parties both in Europe and the United States.
