The study group covers issues in international security. The developments in NATO will be discussed regularly in the context of the likely renegotiation of the alliance’s strategic underpinning in the coming years. In addition, the role of Germany and the European Union as actors in strategic regions will be of major concern.

Research: Dr. Henning Riecke
The study group consists of a core group, which meets more frequently or intensely to produce recommendations on a single topic, and of a larger circle of EU experts, who discuss the findings and more general subjects in larger panel discussions. The core group’s agenda will be dominated by questions relating to the preparation of the German presidency in 2007.

The study group deals with current global problems in the area of environment and development. Upcoming topics will include climate control after 2012, energy security, the millennium goals in Africa and new forms of financing development. The German G8 presidency in 2007 will be of major interest for the group. Dr. Riecke supervises sessions on environmental, technology and security issues.
Together with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Berlin, Clingendael Institut, The Hague, Atlantische Commissie, biannually rotating between Amsterdam and Berlin.
