Wednesday 24. June 18:30 - 20:00
Location: DGAP, Berlin

The progressing peace process in Côte d' Ivoire will enable the long-due presidential elections in November 2009. Even if the country can produce growth rates, it is essential that a quick acquittance and debt restructuring will be made possible. Thus, support by Germany and Europe is needed for rebuilding the nation. Those were the most important statements made by HE Guillaume Kigbafori Soro, Prime Minister of the Republic of Côte d' Ivoire and Secretary-General of the former group of rebels „Forces Nouvelles”. The Prime Minister gave his assessment on the current situation of Côte d' Ivoire on June 24th at DGAP.

The peace agreement of Ouagadougou has set the basis for peace and reunification of the country, HE Guillaume Kigbafori Soro said. All political forces have to co-operate in order to accomplish peacefully presidential elections maintaining the stability of the nation. The establishment of an independent electoral committee and the preparation of voting lists independently from political affiliation, regional origin or religion, would show the will of the government to reach a sustaining peace, the Prime Minister said.

According to the Prime Minister, the country has proven some success in economic terms as well. For instance, Côte d' Ivoire has joined an initiative for acquittance of external debts by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Nevertheless, such measures were not sufficient. Therefore, it is very important that the investors return to the country, HE Soro said. Therefore, his journey to Germany did not only serve as an exchange of experience, but rather for applying for assistance by German investments in energy, mining industry and agriculture, and technical co-operation. The good relationship with Germany should be maintained, since Germany is a very important partner of Côte d' Ivoire. The country can also profit from the German experience of reunification.
