The German government should base its external decisions more on multilateral, economical and ecological principles in order to manage new global challenges. Multilateral organizations like IMF and UN should be reformed to strengthen their legitimacy and their capacity to act. The strategy of the Green Party – so-called “New Green Deal” - consists of an effective combination of economy and ecology, and is designed to face the economic crisis and the global warming. The stabilisation of the financial markets would only be successful, if it is based on protection of the environment and a program against poverty. Those were the most important statements made by Jürgen Trittin, assistant chairman of the political party Bündnis 90/ DIE GRÜNEN in the parliament. He held his speech “Continuity and change in foreign policy” on 30th June in the DGAP in Berlin.
Only by a cooperation of the EU-states, Europe could reduce its dependence on Russian electricity and gas, Trittin said. “The problem is self-made”, Trittin argued. The decisions of the government led to a situation, where only a few companies control the energy market and Germany is dependent on Russia only. Besides, the EU-states had failed to develop alternatives, like the construction of new pipelines for an energy supply from North Africa. For the future it will be necessary to save energy and to look for alternative energy sources, because energy supplies are limited.
Industrialised and developing countries should invest massively in modern, environmental-friendly technologies. Therewith, they could provide new jobs and conduct climate protection effectively. This development should not only be restricted to industrialised countries, but furthermore include developing countries. Trittin stressed, that the US-American president has set a good example in the current climate debate. Hence, the chances are good that developing countries and emerging nations will follow.
