How can we solve the problems of a growing world population and the resulting economic and ecological challenges? Wich role should Germany play? These questions were the focal points in the lecture „Economic success and ecological responsibility – Germany in the European competition“, which was held by Sigmar Gabriel, federal minister for the environment, nature conservation and nuclear safety on September 1st, 2008 at the German Council on Foreign Relations. It was a joint event of DGAP with the „Initiativkreis Wirtschaft - Junge Führungskräfte für die SPD e.V. “
Energy and environment are central subjects of the 21st century which are closely linked, Gabriel said. A strategy for the solution is the more efficient application of resources and the change from fossil on renewable raw materials. The government must create the necessary conditions to secure Germany’s position as an ecological industrial country in the international competition. Thus, the government should create, for example, the legal basic conditions of a faster application of ecologically friendly technologies. In addition, Gabriel is convinced that Germany’s core competence is innovation. “If you want to have an ecologically flawless environment, you need well qualified people and technologies in the area of energy efficiency and climate protection.” Therefore, the companies should invest more in qualification of the younger generation. Moreover, the German Federal Government should do more in the area of education. Thus, Germany has a leading role as an industrial nation within the EU in the area of environmental and climate protection. According to Gabriel, environmental protection creates more employment in Germany. In addition, the development of energy-efficient technologies results in a more effficient use of resources and to the improvement of the worldwide climate.
