Mobility and working migration – a challenge of Czech-German relations?

„Mobility and working migration – a challenge of Czech-German relations?” – Czech and German politicians as well as representatives of employers and employees from both countries discussed this topic on Saturday, May 31 2008, at the German Council on Foreign Relations.

On the occasion of the pending decision of the German government to extend or abolish the constrictions of the German labour market for those states which joined the EU in 2004, the advisory committee of the Czech-German Discussion Forum launched a panel discussion, that had been prepared by the working group “mobility and working migration in Czech-German relations” in several expert discussions.

As an introduction into the topic, the leaders of the working group Carsten Lenk, Robert Bosch foundation, and Detlef Wittig, Volkswagen AG, presented the recommendations of the working group with a plea to lift restrictions of the German labour market. In the following discussion, Petr Nečas, the Czech Minister for Labour and Social Affairs, Kajo Wasserhövel, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Labour and Social Affairs, Helmut Fiedler, Confederation of German Trade Unions, Pavel Kafka, Siemens s.r.o., as well as Detlef Wittig debated the opportunities and dangers of the opening of the labour market.
