On
May 6th, 2008 DGAP hosted an exclusive press conference featuring a
high-ranking Afghan delegation. Three provincial governors en route to NATO
headquarters stopped in Berlin for a short visit where they met with
representatives of the German government and the parliament. The delegation consists
of the Governor of Laghman, Lutfallah Mashal, the Governor of Nangahar, Gul Aghan Sherzai
and the Governor of Baghlan, Abdul Jabar Haqbeen.
After an introduction by the Ambassador of the Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Prof. Dr. Maliha Zulfacar, as well as by the Research Director of the DGAP, Prof. Dr. Eberhard Sandschneider, the delegation reported on the current situation in Afghanistan. They underlined the importance of the engagement of the international community in the common struggle against drug trafficking, terrorism, and corruption as well as the international assistance in building infrastructure and providing education. For example, due to joint action poppy production in some provinces has been significantly reduced. The participants thanked especially Germany for its leading assistance in training Afghan police forces. According to the delegation members, this commitment should be further increased and decentralized. In sum, the governors asked for better coordination and extension of international military and civilian engagement to the provinces.
