Pakistan: Challenges Following the Recent Parliamentary Elections

Wednesday 23. April 12:00 - 14:00
Location: DGAP, Berlin

Pakistan is a key U.S. ally in the war on terror and a significant agent for successful stabilization and reconstruction in Afghanistan. Pervez Musharraf lost his majority in the national parliament in the recent Pakistani elections. The result may produce a political power struggle between President Musharraf and the newly elected Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani. How will U.S. foreign policy respond to the new political situation in Pakistan? What implications does this have for German foreign policy in Afghanistan?

These questions were debated during an expert discussion which took place on April, 23rd at the DGAP and hosted the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Donald Camp. Moderated by the Executive Vice President of the DGAP, Fritjof von Nordenskjöld, participants discussed U.S. military and development assistance to Pakistan, the role of the Pakistani army, a potential dialogue with militant groups bordering Afghanistan, and a stronger multilateral engagement with Western allies.
