Study Group on Future Global Questions: Genetic Patenting

Under the headline „Access to nature and genetic patenting: conflicts at the 9th Conference on Biodiversity““, the group looked at one of the topics of the conference in May in Bonn. The delegates will work on a mandate for a new regime on Access/Benefit Sharing, to level out the complicated conflict on the patenting of natural genetic resources.

Dr. Berthold Rutz of the European Patent Office in Munich analysed the basic problems and offered scenaries on the patenting issue. René Röspel, MP from the Social Democratic Fraction discussed the conflicts of interest and sketched out the expectations of the governing parties in the Bundestag about the government’s policy at the conference. Dr. Ricardo Gent Managing Director of the German Association of the Biotechnology Industry named the problems in writing the rules of the regime and discussed the sometiomes contentious positions of the industry. Christine von Weizsäcker, President of the NGO Ecoropa, scrutinized positions and the power distribution in the policy field before the conference.

The Study Group is chaired by Dr. Reinhard Loske, Senator of the Environment in Bremen. Study group meetings are confidential; participation is by invitation only. Academic advisor to the Study Group is Dr. Henning Riecke.
