DGAP Tour for Members: "perspektiven:europa"

Sunday 18. May 12:00 - Monday 19. 10:00
Location: Berlin–Warschau–Kaliningrad–Wilna

On 17 May 2008, the members’ excursion “perspektiven:europa” was officially launched in the DGAP. In a discussion with His Excellency Dr. Marek Prawda (Polish ambassador to Germany) and His Excellency Evaldas Ignatavicius (Lithuanian ambassador to Germany), fundamental issues surrounding the European unification process were debated. The tone was thus set for the upcoming train journey and its theme – different perspectives on Europe. The reception following the discussion provided an opportunity for the 60 participants to meet one another before their trip, which takes place from 18 – 25 May from Berlin, via Warsaw and Kaliningrad, to Vilnius.

The project is organised by the DGAP in partnership with the Robert Bosch Foundation; each institution has allocated half of the total participant places to their members and alumni. On the ground, the DGAP is cooperating with the Centre for International Relations (Warsaw), the Europe Institute Klaus Mehnert (Kaliningrad) and the Lithuanian Historical Institute (Vilnius).

Along the journey and in the cities themselves, issues including German-Polish relations, the political and economic situation of the Kaliningrad region, and Russia’s relations with the EU (particularly those countries visited by participants) will be explored in discussion sessions and in talks with Polish, Russian and Lithuanian representatives from politics and society. The cities visited will also be introduced and an insight into their culture and society will be given.
