On 18 June 2010, Alexander Rahr, together with other Yalta European Strategy board members, was received by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Yanukovych discussed the improving economic situation in his country as well as his upcoming trip to Germany. In this context, Yanukovych announced that, among other things, he intends to use good relations with Germany as a basis to send important political signals to the European Union. Ukraine would like to establish a free trade area with the European Union. Moreover, Yanukovych hopes for the abolishment of visa regulations between Ukraine and the EU.

Almut Möller, the Head of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, gave a speech at the EPIN conference in Istanbul on the topic of “Europe 2030: Debating a Broader European Strategic Concept”. EPIN regularly organizes meetings for its European think tank members in both EU member and applicant countries. This event was hosted by the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy (EDAM).

On 10 June 2010, Alexander Rahr chaired a podium discussion at the international conference “Drug Production in Afghanistan. A Challenge to the International Community” in Moscow. Among the participants were: Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, NATO Ambassador Dmitri Rogozin, generals of ISAF mission, members of the Afghan government, politicians on security policy from India, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Colombia, and the U.S.

From May 17th until May 19th, Alexander Rahr participated in the international conference “Africa21” in Yaonde, Cameroon. The conference was dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the end of African colonization. Several African heads of state participated as well. Rahr led discussions with Mohmad El Baradei, the former chairman of the IAEA, the president of the Commission of the African Union, Jean Ping, as well as the erstwhile French Prime Minister Alain Juppé about the new geopolitical situation in the world and Africa’s future role in world politics.

On April 27, 2010, Marcel Viëtor spoke at an international resource conference in The Hague on “Energy and foreign policy integration at the EU level”. Besides food, water and mineral resources, energy was a core topic of the conference which the Dutch Government and the Clingendael-Institute organised.

Almut Möller, head of the Alfred von Oppenheim Center for European Policy Studies, held a lecture on March 29th, 2010 at the 126th Baden-Baden Enterprise Talks on the topic “The Role of Germany as Global Political Actor”. With their conferences held several times a year, the Baden-Baden Talks have become a central platform for exchange for individuals from the business, politics and science sector.

On March 23, 2010, at a strategy seminar at the Führungsakademie (highest military academy) of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg, Marcel Viëtor lectured on the global challenges for energy supply and future energy security. He spoke about this topic also on March 17, 2010, at the Federal Foreign Office’s training course International Futures for diplomats and young potentials from governments and think tanks in major emerging economies.

On the 20th of January 2010 Dr. Stefan Meister spoke in the context of a panel discussion organized by the DGAP Forum NRW and the Deutsch-Usbekische Gesellschaft about the increasing importance of Central Asia for the EU in Bonn. At the event Meister pointed out, that the EU is competing increasingly regarding resources and influence with China and Russia in the region.

At November 16th. Alexander Rahr gave a lecture as a key note speaker at the V. GASAG dinner colloquy, dealing with the subject „How to avoid the next gas crisis?“. The meeting took place at the Gasometer Berlin. After his lecture he discussed the current situation of the gas proceedings between Russia and the Ukraine with about 100 political and economical participators.

In the context of a meeting of the Working Group European Integration Dr. Stefan Meister spoke on the 12th of November 2009 at the SWP in Berlin about the role of the EU regarding the conflict solution in and after the Russian-Georgian August war in 2008.

On the 4th of November Dr. Stefan Meister spoke in the context of the roundtable discussion on “Security in the South Caucasus and Prospects for Change” about the current situation in the South Caucasus and possible changes in the German policy towards the region with the new Federal Government.
