On February 22, 2010, Marcel Viëtor took part in an expert meeting in Brussels devoted to energy policy and energy security issues. Invited by the President of the European Parliament, he lectured on the topic “Energy Security, Interdependence, and Diversification“.

Central Asia between Russia, China and the EU

On the 20th of January 2010 Dr. Stefan Meister spoke in the context of a panel discussion organized by the DGAP Forum NRW and the Deutsch-Usbekische Gesellschaft about the increasing importance of Central Asia for the EU in Bonn. At the event Meister pointed out, that the EU is competing increasingly regarding resources and influence with China and Russia in the region.

„How to avoid the next gas crisis?“

At November 16th. Alexander Rahr gave a lecture as a key note speaker at the V. GASAG dinner colloquy, dealing with the subject „How to avoid the next gas crisis?“. The meeting took place at the Gasometer Berlin. After his lecture he discussed the current situation of the gas proceedings between Russia and the Ukraine with about 100 political and economical participators.

The EU in the South Caucasus

In the context of a meeting of the Working Group European Integration Dr. Stefan Meister spoke on the 12th of November 2009 at the SWP in Berlin about the role of the EU regarding the conflict solution in and after the Russian-Georgian August war in 2008.

New Approaches for the South Caucasus

On the 4th of November Dr. Stefan Meister spoke in the context of the roundtable discussion on “Security in the South Caucasus and Prospects for Change” about the current situation in the South Caucasus and possible changes in the German policy towards the region with the new Federal Government. The event took place at the Institute for Strategic Studies in Brussels.

On October 29, 2009, at the Energy Day organized by the World Energy Council’s German National Committee, Marcel Viëtor participated in a discussion panel about questions of international gas procurement with focus on Russia and Iran.

Ukraine between EU and Russia

On October 27, 2009, Marcel Viëtor took part in a discussion about Ukraine’s perspectives for integration into the EU, the meaning of ‘European identity” and the role of Russia. The event took place in Bonn and was organized by DGAPforum NRW in cooperation with the German-Ukrainian Society for Economy and Science.

Russia in the Baltic Sea

In the context of the conference “the Baltic Sea Strategy of the European Union” Dr. Stefan Meister, Centre Russia/Eurasia of the DGAP, spoke about the current state of Russia’s policy in the Baltic Sea region on the 21st of October 2009 in Berlin. The conference war organized in collaboration of the European Academy (Berlin) and the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation.

On September 28, 2009, at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s conference “USA – Made in Germany or Buy American?” Josef Braml analyzed “America’s Economic Slow-down” and its ramifications for Europe and Germany.

EU and Russia – Security Aspects

In the context of the European Security Co-operation Course at the NATO-School in Oberammergau Dr. Stefan Meister spoke in front of military executives of NATO about questions of security in the EU-Russia relations on the 24th of September 2009. In doing so he pointed out that in the relations between Moscow and the EU-states soft security risks like energy security and the wealth gap also in other post-Soviet states play an increasing role.

Challenges for the transatlantic energy security

In the context of a conference on “Common Challenges to Transatlantic Energy Security”, organized by the Finnish Institute of International Affairs, the National Intelligent Council and the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Helsinki (15.-16.09.2009) Dr. Stefan Meister emphasized the importance of the diversification of EU energy supply regarding transportation and the source of raw material. The EU shall develop energy supply (connected with energy efficiency) as a new identity-establishing project for a common domestic and foreign policy, said Meister in Helsinki.
